Date and Time: 2 June, 12:00 - 12:30 CEST (GMT+2)

The war in Ukraine, which has entered its third month, has led to deaths and destruction on a tremendous scale and has left at least 15.7 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and protection. We have witnessed the world’s fastest-growing displacement crisis since World War II, with over 7 million people internally displaced and over 5.2 million people who have sought refuge in other countries.

Besides the responsibility to prevent human rights abuses, businesses shall take measures and support humanitarian efforts for people in Ukraine.

The UN Global Compact partnered with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on a Business Guide to urgently respond to Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis. The Guide provides concrete action for businesses to support the Secretary-General’s three-month Flash Appeal for people in Ukraine, and a Regional Refugee Response Plan, under the leadership of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The session will focus on the response of the business sector in Europe to the war in Ukraine, discuss the steps companies have already taken, and examine further opportunities to respond to humanitarian needs.

Speakers:

  • ANNA WIŚNIEWSKA, Skanska
  • KAREEM ELBAYAR, OCHA/UNDP Connecting Business initiative
  • GWENAELLE AVICE-HUET, Schneider Electric
  • VOLODYMYR KOSTIUK, Farmak JSC

About UN Global Compact Leaders Summit

As the world’s leading corporate sustainability initiative, the United Nations Global Compact aims to mobilize a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders to create the world we all want. With just eight years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals before 2030, and as we enter the third year of a global pandemic, it is time to get back on track and return to the core of the sustainability journey to accelerate and scale progress on the Global Goals.  As articulated in our 2021–23 strategy, our ambition is to accelerate and scale the global collective impact of business by upholding the Ten Principles and delivering the SDGs.

The UN Global Compact Leaders Summit will once again convene stakeholders (in person and online) from the United Nations, Governments, business, civil society and all our Local Networks to take stock of progress so far, address the gaps in knowledge, resources and funding.  As our first large hybrid event, the Leaders Summit will convene a global audience through an in-person event held in Bangkok as well as virtual plenaries in Europe, Latin America, Australia, East Asia, Middle East and Africa.  This inclusive two-day event aims to empower business leaders at every level to take collective action and inspire future leaders to embed a sustainability mindset in their work.

Leaders Summit 2022 is designed as a collective and individual evaluation of the sustainability journey; from addressing global themes and trends, to the resources and tools needed to accelerate progress in your own business, culminating in a celebration and a shared vision of the world we all want. In order to look ahead, we must return to the core of our work, strengthen our public-private partnerships, meet companies where they are on their sustainability journey, providing the tools and resources necessary to create ambitious, measurable goals.
