Business Briefing: Mozambique Flood Humanitarian Response Overview

Heavy rains and flooding across Mozambique have affected an estimated 600,000 people as of 19 January 2026, with projections rising to 1.1 million, according to the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD). Prolonged flooding, combined with controlled dam releases, has led to widespread displacement, particularly in Maputo Province and Gaza Province, which accounts for approximately 75 per cent of those affected.

More than 392,000 people have been forced from their homes, many of which are constructed from vulnerable materials such as adobe. The flooding has also damaged health facilities, roads, telecommunications, and other essential infrastructure, compounding humanitarian needs and slowing recovery.

Mozambique has a strong experience responding to disasters. However, the scale and urban nature of this crisis mean that private sector capabilities such as logistics, connectivity, supply chains, and innovation are critical enablers of an effective response. Business contributions have the greatest impact when they are aligned with Government priorities and coordinated through existing response mechanisms.

Join us for this briefing with representatives from the Government, the United Nations, and business leaders to share a clear picture of needs, highlight how companies are already supporting the response, and identify practical ways for the private sector to engage constructively and responsibly.
