OVERVIEW
RISK PROFILE
The Solomon Islands ranks among the ten countries most exposed and vulnerable to natural hazards worldwide, facing tropical cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods and landslides across its scattered archipelago. Modelling by the World Bank projects natural hazards and climate change will cause average annual losses of around USD 20.5 million, which is roughly 3% of GDP, every year over the next 50 years, with a single severe event capable of wiping out more than 40% of GDP.
The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) is the peak private sector representative organisation in the Solomon Islands representing more than 200 organisations covering about 80% of the private sector with more than 60% of its membership being micro and small businesses with less than 20 employees.
It is a membership-driven non-profit organisation which serves as the key advocacy organisation for policies that remove barriers to entry and lower the cost of doing business while focusing on economic growth and job creation. The Chamber also drives changes to the legislation that favour a conducive and regulated environment within which businesses may flourish.
During times of crisis, the private sector – even though affected – are often at the forefront of the rescue or assistance efforts for affected areas in Solomon Islands. What is often needed, however, is an effective coordination to allow businesses to be part of the disaster and risk management of Solomon Islands, access to information, and the much-needed finance through GEF or other initiative funds. SICCI has shown itself to be proactive and engaged in this space since 2019 until 2023, with the most recent Melanesia Sub-regional Climate Finance Workshop in August 2025.
SICCI joined the Connecting Business initiative (CBI) as its 21st Member Network. As part of the partnership, SICCI will establish a Business Resilience Committee to better engage the private sector in disaster management and resilience-building efforts, with CBI providing support and connecting SICCI to the wider network of Member Networks so it can learn from their experience.
The establishment of the Solomon Islands Business Resilience Committee (SIBRC) is the result of an initiative taken from the recommendation from the 2020 Private Sector Mapping of the Private Sector Activities related to Climate Change Adaption and Mitigation in Solomon Islands, Pacific Business Resilience Network (Vanuatu Business Resilience Council), regional private sector entities (Fiji, PNG, Vanuatu Chambers), regional private sector representative organisations, Solomon Islands Governments, and the United Nations Connecting Businesses Initiative (CBI), and Non-Government Organisations (SPREP and PIFS).
