Peru is responding to the impact of a significant earthquake that struck the Junín region on 18 July 2026, with the epicenter located near Chupaca, approximately 10 kilometers from Huancayo. Peru’s official seismic authority, the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), reported a magnitude of 5.1, while international agencies recorded the event at approximately 5.5 Mw.
According to the latest information from the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI), the earthquake resulted in five fatalities, 71 injuries, 2,764 people displaced or otherwise left in need of assistance, and more than 1,300 affected residents. Authorities have also reported extensive housing damage, including 407 destroyed homes, 738 homes rendered uninhabitable, and more than 500 additional homes affected.
The Government of Peru declared a state of emergency in the affected districts to accelerate response and recovery efforts. National and local authorities, supported by emergency response agencies, continue to conduct damage assessments, distribute humanitarian assistance, restore essential services, and provide temporary shelter for affected families.
Priority needs include temporary shelter, food assistance, healthcare support, psychosocial services, restoration of critical infrastructure, and support for livelihoods impacted by the earthquake.
Private Sector Response Efforts
The private sector has mobilized rapidly to support response efforts through Hombro a Hombro, Peru’s leading business network for disaster preparedness and emergency response. Hombro a Hombro brings together more than 150 companies and is the national Member Network of the Connecting Business initiative (CBI).
Since 19 July, Hombro a Hombro has been deployed in the affected areas y Chupaca and Huancayo, conducting needs assessments and coordinating with national authorities – including INDECI – and private sector partners to identify priority support for affected communities.
