# Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA)

## OVERVIEW

### RISK PROFILE

Kenya is highly vulnerable to climate shocks, with recurrent drought and flooding already driving food insecurity and displacement across the country. Roughly 70% of Kenya's natural disasters are attributable to extreme climatic events. Without further adaptation investment, it is estimated that climate change could shrink Kenya's GDP by up to 7% by 2050 and push a further 1.1 million people into poverty.

Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) members include local and foreign business associations, chambers of commerce, professional bodies, corporates from multinational companies, micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and start-ups from all economic sectors.

KEPSA aims to be the voice of the business community in Kenya to engage and influence public policy for better business environment. KEPSA works with the government, development partners and other stakeholders on cross-cutting issues and programmes.

It also supports businesses with training, networking, financial linkages, mentorship and coaching, and access to market and investment opportunities.

Established in 2003, KEPSA has been influential in driving the country’s economic transformation. KEPSA engaged in the writing of the national Vision 2030 blueprint, as well as other economic policies and agendas. It also played an important role in the reconciliation process that followed the disputed 2007 general elections and the subsequent violence. KEPSA was one of the 22 organizations that took part in the Committee of Experts that worked on the new Constitution promulgated in 2010. It later established Mkenya Daima (Kenyan forever), a platform that brought together public figures, business leaders and civil society to advocate for peaceful elections and prosperity for all.

In 2022, KEPSA signed a [Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Development Programme](https://twitter.com/UNDPKenya/status/1595840076331814912?s=20&t=bszNL-faxvyJsGh0oQQ8rg) to establish a framework for partnerships to attain the Sustainable Development Goals.

In response to the historic drought that's devastating the country and affecting more than 4 million people, KEPSA and its members [have supported the government-led response](https://kepsa.or.ke/kepsanews/the-launch-of-the-drought-flash-emergency-appeal-in-garissa-county) and mobilized over US$10 million in cash and in-kind contributions.

KEPSA's partnership with CBI focuses on supporting Kenyan businesses with disaster management and climate resilience interventions, with an emphasis on helping MSMEs to better prepare for, respond to and recover from crises. CBI will provide KEPSA with a customized network capacity development journey and access to learning resources and peer-to-peer exchanges focusing on introduction to the humanitarian system, business continuity planning for small- and medium-sized enterprises, climate resilience and conflict sensitivity.
